Woodson Bridge State Recreation Area
Filed in Blog, Campgrounds
Woodson Bridge SRA is a mere six miles from South Avenue, which is also where the Flying J is to be found. Just continue along the lane and it’s right there on the left. You’ll see “state park this way” type brown signs.
This has to have been one of the prettiest state parks I’ve been to. Designed to be “environmental”–as close to its original state as possible–it has no dump station but at $11 a night that’s no hardship. There’s a group camping area, and the spaces are fine up to about a 40′ rig (you might have trouble with a 55′ rig, but we were told there’s at least one space that can accommodate this–I’m not sure you’d want to drive the curving, narrow road, though).

Each space has a rare modicum of privacy with its surrounding of bushes and mature forest. There is a fire pit and picnic table. Spaces are back-in only.
There is a lovely nature trail that starts near the toilet block for group camping, though with rangers hard to find I had no idea what the different numbered stations were showing me.
There is a picnic area near the river, which can flood (but the park is kept closed at these times). The park may also temporarily close due to the budget crisis–it hasn’t been announced yet for sure.
This is a fantastic place for bird watching, but is quite heavy on the bug population. I was bitten to pieces by mosquitoes. We were assured that these were not disease-carrying. ;)
You can fill up your tanks from one of the several faucets dotted around the area but there is no dump station. (There’s one up at the Flying J, though.) All in all this was a wonderful spot with a particularly friendly campground host, and I’d go back in a heartbeat.

hey, i’ve found something that works pretty well for mosquitos that may be already in your rig…fabric softner sheets for the dryer - even gently used ones seem to work. just tuck one or two in your pocket (i leave them dangling out a bit) before you head out and the monsters seem to stay away. mosquitos are a particular bother in late july/early august when my blueberries are ripe - they seem to love just hanging about in those bushes waiting. with a dryer sheet in each pocket, i come out of a picking session with few, if any bites.

How strange! I’ll have to see about giving that a shot. I did find my bottle of Jungle Juice and other spray repellents, but they do pong. At least dryer sheets are nice. :)
