There’s something about the weather

Filed in Blog

Right now, the wind is gusting from behind the RV and trying to turn the heater/air conditioner the wrong way. Each time this happens, my ears try to pop as the internal pressure here changes.

There is something about weather in an RV that just can’t be avoided. It’s like when you’re on a motorcycle: while you’re not (mostly) at the whim of the gusts and the rain, you can’t ignore it. A house does not (usually) shake, and rain is not always heard. The ferocity of a wind storm goes unnoticed. But here, where the walls are thin and made of fiberglass, it’s rather different.

Besides, as a Brit, it means that I get to indulge in that national passion: talking about the weather. It makes me feel so much at home. ;)

I know that since I’ve moved into Harvey I’ve become more interested in the weather radar. And I’ve been quite chuffed to discover that there’s a Weather for Dummies book which I intend to request at the library some time soon when I’ve finished my current batch of reading.

I think that learning about what makes weather might be both interesting and useful. Don and I are both interested in boondocking–living off the grid as much as we can–and I’m pretty sure an understanding of what makes weather would be a useful skill under those circumstances. It’s kind of why I have copies of some survival books in here, too.

And now, if you don’t mind, I’ll go off to wait for my ears to explode. ;)

I know completely what you mean about experience weather in an RV. I’ve been through rain, wind and a blizzard in one.

Some summer you should take Harvey to the Grand Canyon. Hopefully you can be there during the Arizona monsoonal rains. It won’t rain at the canyon but you will be able to get a 360 panorama view of the lightning just at the tree-line. From the upper bunk of an RV, it is an amazing light show.

Wow: that would be awesome. One of my favorite childhood memories is of watching storms from balconies–my aunt and uncle’s, or my grandparents’, in Slovenia. They live/d in a valley and the storm would just roll up and down it. Fantastic.
