Thursday Thirteen #3: 13 Things about Lodi, California

- Where the heck is Lodi?
- It’s located near the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta, which is beautiful.
- Every year in November there is a Crane Festival to celebrate the return of the sandhill cranes.
- Wild grapes always used to grow in the area, but the first attempt at grape growing for wine was in 1850 when Charles Weber, founder of Stockton, planted some. Two years later, Massachusetts man George West planted more and established the first major vineyard of the area.
- Tokay and zinfandel grapes thrive here.
- In 1986 Lodi received its own appellation, allowing vintners to proclaim that their wine was from Lodi. Ever since, “boutique wine” has become a strong industry in Lodi, with hundreds (if not thousands) of acres dedicated to vineyards.
- There are at least thirty different wineries. With the increase of this industry, Lodi has become a “trendier” place to live and prices have gone up enormously in the last ten years (as has building).
- Despite all this, it still manages to retain a “small town” feel.
- Historic downtown has recently been revitalized with many pretty murals being added.
- The city was incorporated in 1906. (It was actually founded in 1869 when Charles O. Ivory and John M. Burt established “the Ivory Store” and its original name was Mokelumne. Before white settlers came, it was home to Miwok Indians.
A&W root beer was first introduced here.
- In the winter, thick tule fog is more than common. Then, in the summer, it gets hot–over 100 degrees on a regular basis in July and August.
- The city has an estimated population of 68,500. I’m not entirely sure where they all hide. According to Wikipedia, the racial makeup is 74% white, 27% Hispanic, plus a couple more percents “other.” Do the math and tell me what is wrong with this picture?
- Most people who don’t live here, if they have heard of Lodi at all, have so because of the Creedence Clearwater Revival song Lodi.

I’ve been to Lodi a couple of times. The last time was in 1991 and possibly 2000. Happy TT.

OK, I just came from my sister~in~law’s blog. I saw Lodi, Ca mentioned. I grew up in North Stockton/ went to school in Lodi, (Tokay) / and live in Lockeford.

How close is Lodi to Hinkley? I studying Tort law and she made us read Erin Brockovich’s bio. Yucko! I applaud what she did and everything - but does she have to always dress like a hooker?

Hehe, I had a bit of fun with that Lodi wine thing when I was back east. I was staring at the list of wines, just seeing where they were all from, and sure enough, one of them was from Lodi, which led me into a giggling fit.

I am familiar with Lodi! In my teen years I used to go to a Bible camp at Hume Lake and there were always kids from Lodi there.

Hinckley is in the Mohave Desert, some 360 miles south of here.
100-degree days are the norm down there during the summer. I too would wear as little clothing as I could bear if I worked there–and if I look half as good as her when I reach that age, I’ll be happy.
I’ve always felt it better to judge a person by their deeds than their looks, myself. In the end, what comes from the heart is what is important. The rest is just an outer shell.
