The cost of aluminum

Filed in Blog

We have a tripod and a satellite dish, which we acquired for a shade over $200. List is $700 and up. Now, we need to mate the two; specifically, we need a piece on which the dish can pivot and be positioned. One can buy these parts, but we pooh-poohed that idea because they were ridiculously expensive. Don drafted up what he wanted and started calling around welders and metalworkers, of which there are many in Lodi.

Today he went to see one. The first problem is that the cost of aluminum has shot up, meaning that it costs more to have the parts made than it would be to fork out those online prices.

The second problem is that we are due to leave this campground Real Soon Now and wind our way up to the mountains.

The third problem is that Monday is a public holiday, so nobody’s going to be shipping until Tuesday, and none of it would be likely to arrive here before we actually have to be up in the mountains.

Yeah, really, we kind of shot ourselves in the foot. ;)
