Sometimes things can get too exciting

Filed in Blog

We were up bright and early today to pick up JR from the vet. He is much happier at home and seems to have gotten unblocked. The vet bill did indeed top $1300 but wasn’t quite as bad as I had expected.

Later we went back to bed, because, well, we could. ;)

I shopped in the storage shed today and brought home more stuff for my portable office, books to read and review, and some other bits and bobs. To my delight, I discovered my CD cases full of music and now when we travel we will no longer have to listen to the same Grateful Dead CD over and over again, as that was the only CD we had in the rig. ;)

Then I shopped and came home with Thanksgiving Dinner.

The real excitement started around dinner time. We had tripped the breakers a few times but this time nothing came back up and the inverter was making some unpleasant humming noises. For a scary while we thought we had lost the inverter. When Don turned on the generator it made, to paraphrase him, “A noise the likes of which I’d never before heard.” But when he turned it off the shore power came back on again, so go figure. He thinks that one of the relays may be dirty, but they’re hard to get to.

Losing the inverter would have been a Very Bad Thing.

I think today was just “no power day.” Just before 8 this morning we heard a loud BANG and then all the lights went dead. I think one of local transformers blew. Anyway, the power was out until 1:30.

    Ohh, bummer!

What do you do for work when that happens? Just not work, or have to reschedule everything?

I had to get Don out of bed this morning because we were offline (he has an amazing but complicated network that doesn’t just have a “button” to press to make it work again)

Fortunately I am taking the entire week off. So rather than worry about the power outage, I went snarfing on Mt. Diablo!

When I am working and the power goes off I do the following:

    1) call my boss to let him know what’s going on
    2) wait one hour to see if power comes back on
    3) if not, call back boss and tell him I’m off to the local coffee house which has free wireless.

    Hey, that works. :)
