Road Trip Dream: Carol White

Filed in Blog, Reviews
I first “met” Carol through a writer’s forum I used to participate in.

Since at that time my husband and I had pretty much abandoned all hope of doing an RV trip anytime soon (I had no idea back then that we’d shortly be handed our notice on a plate and the mobile home park owner would sell our community out for two million bucks, launching us into RV living), I thought it was an interesting book and bought a copy.

Carol and her husband Phil took a year-long road trip in a class B (van conversion) RV. This book details–with an emphasis on “details”–the process of making this road trip dream happen. Topics covered include what to do with the car, the mail, the house…even the grandkids, and dealing with all the inevitable naysayers. (Have you ever noticed how, when you commit to doing something exciting or interesting, a bunch of people come out of the woodwork and tell you about all the things that could wrong?)

This is not a book about going full-time RVing. It’s about finding the money and making the time to make an extended trip happen. They posted their full budget–both projected and actual–and frankly, it’s over three times what we spend on ours. But they lived it up, they stayed in motels, and they had some extra expenses (a broken ankle!)–and they lived their dream (ankle notwithstanding).

The first half of the book is about planning and preparation, written with much humor and an easy, entertaining style. The second half is a travelog, a diary of what they did to give an idea of what it’s like. It does that, but I wish they’d extended the planning part to a full book and edited the diary to a fuller, more interesting travelog (it has potential).

On the other hand, I loved that they visited all the national parks on the lower 48 except for those they’d already been to. Their trick for having a “theme” is a good one, and gives focus to a long trip (I have this lingering dream to visit all the national historic sites in the USA, myself.)

Signed copies of Road Trip Dream are available from the authors.

My copy is up for grabs. If you’d like it, please comment and say so, and I’ll put your name in a hat for a drawing on December 21st. Please pass the word out!
