Pancake Day

When we recently went to New Hogan Reservoir, it was Shrove Tuesday. This means Pancake Day for me, as a Brit, and I’d made sure to buy pancake mix and syrup (though I wish I’d splurged and got some good, real, maple syrup.) The first batch I made was a mess–it tasted like pancakes but broke into a million pieces. So Don offered to make some more the next day…and got it right.
Mmm, pancakes.

Something new I learned this year. Apparently the Polish celebrate Fat Tuesday (traditionally Fat Thursday, but in my area it’s on Tuesday) by making and eating Paczki’s - a traditional doughnut. I didn’t try one this year, but they show up in every bakery around here for a week beforehand, and it was quite bizarre to all of a sudden be surrounded by this thing you never knew existed.

We’ve been trying to cut HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup) out of our diet, and the syrup was one of the first things to go. DH was very unhappy, as he doesn’t like the “real stuff.” [dork!] Had to do some hunting before I could find a viable alternative. I usually have syrup only if we’re eating out, as I’m a peanut butter+nutella girl by choice (we don’t make pancakes or waffles here often, thank goodness).

Ah, now I don’t like peanut butter, and nutella I can take or leave. So, what was the viable alternative?
HFCS is evil.

I found a bottle of Griffin’s Original Syrup, which has sugar syrup and corn syrup, but not of the HFCS density. Steve says it’s ok, but not what he likes best.

Interesting. Though the next time, I’m just gonna get some good quality maple syrup and be done with it. ;)
Hm….I have this sudden hankering for pancakes now. Oops.
