Who would you be?

CatwomanSometime in November — preferably around the 5th — we’re going to have a bonfire night party. The fire restrictions should be over with enough rain to lessen the risk, and there’s a large pile of debris to get rid of.

This’ll be a combination Halloween/bonfire Night (Guy Fawkes Night if you prefer) not to mention Samhain adventure. I’m looking forward to providing the food on this one–British stuff, learning how to make toffee and parking. I even found some nice easy-looking recipes and there are mushy peas in the local supermarket. Trinity County rocks!

Costumes aren’t required, and I don’t suppose we’ll get any or many trick-or-treaters around here. Perhaps there’s something in downtown Weaverville.

I’ve always wanted to be Catwoman. Especially purple Catwoman. ;)

What about you?

It’s a good job she has a tail

Don hung the bird feeder in the tree to keep it away from the squirrels. Nevertheless, the jays land on the feeder, spill seed, and the squirrels wait around for the spoils.

Often, we open the door and let the screen door filter in air. The cats, lately, have become quite entertained by this kitty TV. Apparently, Gracie has been plotting.

When I entered the rig today, she made a sudden, rare and very unexpected bid for freedom. All I can say is…it’s a good job she has a tail.

Gracie isn’t talking to me just now. ;)

These are not the finches you are looking for

Some while ago I bought a window bird feeder, to which the only birds that come are jays (even though we bought “finch mix”). And they find it a bit awkward. We left the feeder behind on our recent trip and came back to find it very depleted. So, rather than force jays to balance on a tiny shelf, I put it on the slab of concrete that lies not far from our door-window.

This morning I disturbed maybe half a dozen jays from their breakfast when I popped outside for my morning sit in the sun. (more…)

Power

We recently returned from a four-night trip up as far as Dunsmuir, a lovely little railroad town with waterfalls and all sorts of interesting goodies. I hiked my little heart out and we learned some new and interesting things about the RV.

Firstly, our battery stopped wanting to charge as much as it should. This was okay; we got by with early nights, little solar lamps, and a campfire. But we did start talking about electricity. We’re strongly leaning towards investing in a single 150-watt solar panel and maybe an extra house battery. This would allow us to boondock or stay in the lovely, quiet campgrounds that don’t have hookups. Given that one of these critters will set us back $750 or so we’re still investigating, but at $30 a night for a full-hookup campground, it would pay for itself in 25 days. (more…)
