Orland Buttes Campground
Filed in Blog, Campgrounds
Orland Buttes Campground is a small Army Corps of Engineers campground west of Orland, California, suitable for tent campers and small to medium-sized RVs and trailers. It has 35 sites along with a group area which is by reservation only, and is pretty much aimed at boaters with its own boat ramp and fish cleaning area (this area is shared by day users too). It’s open April through September.

Camping was $15 a night (April 2008) with a dump station and water, but no hookups. Each site has a fire pit and picnic table and not all of them are level by a long way. ;)

On the face of it there is not much to do there, until you go back down the road a short ways and find the trail head for Simpson Bridge. This is a lovely, well-maintained path of about a mile which leads to a remote picnic area and wonderful views over the lake and back to the campground.

Simpson Bridge used to be the only way across the creek until the dam was put into service in 1963. Simpson liked it so much that he had some girders saved to form an arch over the benches with a view. I didn’t see another soul while I was out there and it was wonderfully peaceful and pretty. There’s also another trail that leads over Eagle Pass, a more serious hike.

If you want to boat or you just want some time away from it all, this is a good place for it.
