Listening to the scanner

Filed in Blog

The smoke and ashes have made it all the way down here. We’re still not at risk from fire, but let’s just say that air quality has taken a nosedive.

What’s fascinating to me is the scanner used by fire services. Most of the communities west of here have been evacuated now. The road is closed now from just before Weaverville to 25 miles after it (that’s not the way we’ll leave if/when we do). But here are two things I heard recently on the scanner:

(1) Arrangements are being made to get horses out of there for owners who don’t have trailers.

(2) A dog with rabies tag was found running on the highway; the dispatcher wants the tag looked up so that owner can be asked what needs to be done with the dog.

The firefighting teams are spread extremely thin. The smoke is too thick to allow for flying, so all the fighting has to be done on foot. Really, we need teams from other parts of the country and state. I gather we got one from San Jose; good. But: more lightning is likely this weekend, which will only make it worse.

But they’re still looking after the critters.
