Just for a change, it’s hot

Filed in Blog

I woke up to smoke again this morning. Then I tootled on up to see the traveling vet administering all manner of maintenance to some particularly displeased horses. Various of the locals club together to rent the vet and then split the costs, which works out very well. Also, I discovered that one of the neighbors is a demolition derby (stock car) racer, so I can see a fun visit in the future. (The next race is at the county fair, in August.)

There was supposed to be a motorcycle rally at those same fairgrounds, in Hayfork, this weekend, but it got canceled. The fairgrounds are being used as firefighter central.

The fires down near Whiskeytown Lake are getting out of hand. The strong winds are nice for smoke-clearing but rotten for firefighting. 299 is now closed from the county line down to somewhere near Redding. The fire is threatening houses and a couple of historic areas. It’s pretty grim. We’re still safe, but it sure is an uneasy feeling and I hope they can open the road up again soon. Bits of the forest are closed until September.

I went into Weaverville after the vet adventure. I wanted to join the library, but apparently it’s closed Friday through Sunday(!) So I just did post office and grocery shopping and as a result we had a very nice steak and baked spud dinner.

So that’s my news. It’s hot. The forest’s burning. The river’s running, the mosquitos are fading, and in spite of everything we’re doing just fine. :)

I’m a small bit surprised you’re not in Hollister this weekend.

Sorry to hear about the fires up there. While the ones in Monterey County are finally coming under control, it sounds like the ones up north just continue to burn…

Hollister is a 650+ mile round trip for us…prohibitively expensive in the RV, and not really practical on the bike riding two up in this kind of heat. ;)
