Full circle
Filed in BlogIt’s the time of year when the RV shows come to California. We went to one once, years and years ago, and I remember how fascinating it was to poke around in the various models, dodging the sales people. Some are compact and simple, others palatial and vast. In the time since then toy haulers–trailers and RVs with incorporated garages–have really taken off, but they’re still so new that none of the used ones were within our price range.
What strikes me the most about this is that I remember last year looking at this organization’s show in the Alameda County Fairgrounds (that’s Pleasanton to you and me). I can hardly believe it’s been a year. This time last year we were still getting used to the idea of being forced out of our home and yet our first reaction was to think, “Hey, maybe it’s time to get that RV we talked about a few years ago.”
And here we are. I still can’t quite believe it. It isn’t at all how we imagined it: we imagined working for a few years, then retiring independently poor. Now, we’re just poor–at least by financial standards. By other standards, the ones that count, we’re pretty darn rich.
The weather’s pretty foul right now: chances are there won’t be a nice motorcycle-friendly day to travel 60 miles for this show. But there’s another one in March, and I think it might be fun to attend. Meanwhile, if you’re even remotely interested in RVs, it’s always fun to attend these shows.
Just get used to saying, “I’m just looking, thank you.” ;)
