Food, glorious food

Filed in Domesticity, Food

Today was finally the food shopping day. We went to the storage shed first, where Don was all for dropping off the van until I reminded him of the food part. ;)

We tossed out so much food when we emptied our fridge for the move that it is a crying shame. I feel huge guilt about throwing out food of any kind, but there was really no choice. We would therefore be shopping from scratch–this was a shopping trip to set up a household. Naturally, then, I got a bit carried away.

I wasn’t shopping while physically hungry–that kind results in a lot of high carbohydrate snack food for which I later kick myself. I was shopping while emotionally hungry: after being deprived of real food and cooking for almost an entire month. Don formed a search party and found me at the checkout with an entire cart full of stuff, most of which was perishable. I started laughing when I saw his face: there were already lots of paper sacks and I’d just gotten started. Yet I had no doubt that we would make it all fit, because the fridge was almost empty and the freezer was bare. We had the original Mother Hubbard set-up.

It all fit, and there was room to spare.

Dinner was chicken and pasta in bottled tomato and mushroom sauce. It was the best meal I’d had for weeks.
