First night
Filed in BlogOn a motorcycle, you hear sounds that you never do in a car. In an RV, apparently, there is a similar effect. Of course, the RV also provides a slew of new and alarming noises all by itself.
I woke up this morning to the sounds of cat puking, to the high pitched beeps of a pedestrian crossing, to the kiss of daylight through RV blinds and the voices of people going about their daily business. Feeling as though I were on vacation, I allowed the details to impress themselves on me, giving myself time to orient to my new existence. More than a little shell-shocked from the precipitous slide of the last few weeks, I lay in bed and took it all in.
There are tiny specks of black mold on the ceiling above our cabover bed. Gracie threw up because, leaving the dealership too late, we forgot to transfer the cat food from the van and subsequently bought canned food which proved too rich for a stressed-out little cat stomach. There are a couple of tiny holes in the blind (which we have since patched with a Band-Aid).
Clouds of dust emerge from the upholstery if it is struck with anything heavier than a peacock feather. There will be a vaccuum cleaner in our future.
We are to learn about this rig as we go, getting used to its quirks and imperfections, enjoying the almost turquoise upholstery and its strong feeling of being home. We have no idea what we’re doing, really, only that we’re suddenly headlong into an adventure. My life is so different now from how it was this time last year that I barely recognize it and I feel as though I’m in the process of reinventing myself.
It won’t be dull.
