OK. Who stole January?
Filed in DomesticityWhere did the last month go? One minute I was getting slightly tipsy on port wine while seeing in a bunch of New Years, the next it’s February. Dang! but the time goes by quickly.
The chirping of birds finding the food we left for them woke Don, and he woke me up to see them. I watched as a variety of blackbirds, sparrows and even a crow or two showed up to peck at the offerings, getting more manic and comical as the supply dwindled. They sure are spurning my bird cake though. ;)
Don went back to sleep but it was a nice sunny day and I had errands to run. First stop was the commercial post office box where I picked up a magazine which had a certain (formerly) blue-haired friend of mine on the front cover. The guy who runs the shop was tickled pink about this (he knows me now and actually goes to fetch the mail–talk about service!)–and we got to chatting about Australia and how he tried to emigrate there once.
I also finally got to print off some documents–not only my printer jams paper wantonly and nor is it in the rig, which is not conducive to good printing–and all for free. “Part of the service agreement.” Within the week all the last bits of paperwork which bind us to a new town should be done and in the mail.
Next stop was the pet store to buy a new pooper scooper for the cats. Having broken two of the cheapie plastic ones since we got here, I got a metal one. I’d like to see a turd that can break that. Or maybe, come to think of it, I wouldn’t. ;)
On a whim, I tried Ace Hardware to see if they had a window bird feeder. They did! I’m not convinced the suckers will stick to the window, but I’m looking forward to trying. I’m sure the cats will love that. :)
It was lunchtime, as normal nine-til-fivers reckon it, and also the time when everyone and in his brother would be at the post office, so I holed up at a little drive-through coffee place called Java Stop. You order the coffee at a little hut and then can drink it on a pretty little veranda, or indoors where the coffee beans are being roasted in plain view. The walls are all painted in murals, the coffee was good and the little scone nice too–not bad for $2. (Coffee and a scone is $3.40 at Starbuck’s.) I enjoyed a pleasant half-hour out there with my book.
Next stop: USPS, where Don and I now have a post office box. We’ll gradually phase out the commercial one and when the time comes this will make it easier to forward mail to whatever comes next. I also got mail forwarding papers and papers to change the previous mail forwarding order so I have added that to the pile of approximately ten million forms I still need to fill out. I am looking forward to getting offline for a few days so that I can tackle all that backlog.
I then went and bought a few items too many at Smart & Final. We use that store for our bulk items, and it’s the start of the month so our food supplies are way down. Adding everything to the bike was a puzzle, but I managed it, along with some funny looks. It’s not every day that you see a motorcyclist riding along, leaning on a stack of 500 paper plates. ;)

oh linda, i would so have loved to see you riding down the road with your stack ‘o plates!
the sucker should stick fine to your window - if they seem a bit reluctant, dampen the edges and re-apply (i wash mine off and then lick them - works real well)
