Degreasing the fridge
Filed in Cats, DomesticityI woke up with a feeling of unreality and exhaustion, of disconnect from the world. I feel happy with this lifestyle, and unsettled at the same time. After all we’ve gone through in the last months, I don’t think this is particularly surprising…
I figured it would help if I started some routines, so I did. I tackled the laundry and the degreasing of the fridge. It was pretty disgusting and I wanted to have at it before we stocked it to any great extent. We were both pretty impressed with its design, though: there is a cut-out piece in one shelf that is exactly large enough for one gallon of milk. I love this precision, this evidence of thinking ahead: RV designers are smart.
The cats are finally starting to emerge, to be cats instead of entities cowering behind things and glaring at us. They must realize that they will not be moving today, because we found cat toys in places where there had not been cat toys before.
I extracted all the sticky little door trays and dumped them in nice hot soapy water. I was only going to do some of it then decided what the heck and did everything. Now, all I have to do is maintain–and I can stock it with food, to which I am very much looking forward.
It seems that Don and I have a cultural difference going on with the dish washing. My family (and most all the British families that I’ve ever had anything to do with) doesn’t rinse the dishes of soap, just letting them drain then wiping them with dish towels. This sends Don into fits of horror at all that horrible poisonous soap he will be ingesting. ;) I am therefore adding another stage to an already cumbersome task: the rinse. Even the fact that my parents have behaved thusly for their entire fifty years of marriage without obvious signs of soap poisoning is not convincing enough–and in the end, the rinse is but a small thing that makes my husband happier. ;)
When I was done cleaning, I started on another routine–that of writing and blogging. I felt much better, much more grounded, after that. So, apparently, did Gracie.

You look very peaceful…
:)
I’d quite forgotten about the non-rinsing of the dishes after washing up in Britain. It took me ages to get used to the idea of it ~ it is quite a culture clash!
Weird that I’d forgotten all about that until reading your post…
