Clutter

Filed in Blog

Perhaps two weeks in motels have served their purpose after all. Living without stuff, I am starting to realize that I just really didn’t need much around me after all. Many of my personal items have been in storage from as far back as April, and I really don’t miss it. Even books I had held to be “special” really are not, after all. What’s the point of a book that is not read?

I can feel a real sea change inside me, a willingness to go with the flow and to unload years of accumulated junk.

I arrived in the USA ten years ago last August with two suitcases, and ten boxes followed me by sea. Three of those boxes were a stereo that died a matter of weeks later, so I already know that I can pare things down to their barest minimum. Now, I am considering selling my once-prized collection of Imperial Blue Denby stoneware, donating my astrology books to the Faculty of Astrological Studies’ library, and selling Arnie to someone else as a fixer-upper. And all the stuff gathered since then, well–little of it has actual meaning, and there are other ways to preseve memories than to keep junk. Should any of it be missed, a great deal can be purchased for the equivalent of a month’s storage rental.

What Don will do I cannot say. He likes his stuff. But I do know that I will never, ever live such a cluttered existence as I did in my lost house–and in an RV there are weight limitations. This is a good thing.

Wish me luck.

Way to inspire! There’s lots of reasons for paring down, now I just need to find the one that gets me moving.

I did spend a day earlier this month cleaning out and rearranging my closet, taking note of possible donations, and of projects I’d forgotten. That helped me get some things off my office floor, so walking through is much less scary now.

I always feel much lighter once my stuff has gone away. :)

I find the Flylady question is one that helps. “Do I love it?” If not, then it goes away.

There are going to be a lot of 27 fling boogies in my storage shed. ;)
