Cleansing
Filed in DomesticityWe watched this morning as a pair of big Class As left the “campground” in formation, heading off to their own adventures. I’m feeling this weird kind of affinity with RVers now: we’re part of a different group, and I can sense the possibility of many good conversations and interesting encounters as a result.
Yet I still feel like a kind of imposter, being such a newbie: it’s almost as though I haven’t quite clicked that I’m an RVer now, the label hasn’t stuck, and it still feels new and awkward like a pair of shoes that hasn’t yet been broken in. I haven’t relaxed into this new life yet; I guess I will ease into it in stages. I’m still very freaked out from the last several crazy weeks. It will take me some while to unwind and feel good about everything.
Eventually we too pulled out of the campground, me on the bike and Don in the rig. Aside from the test drive, I hadn’t yet been a passenger in our new RV. Many RVers tow a car along, a “toad,”–I was riding the motorcycle in convoy, instead. Much more fun. ;)
We took ourselves off to our storage shed where we started to equip the rig, trying not to move too much in there at once. Cleaning goods, food, some electronics: those were first. I cleaned off some of the nastier items before they went in. Then while Don did some gear-hunting I took the shop vac and cleaned the upholstery and carpets. I also tackled the sink/stove corner and made it shine. There was a great deal less sneezing after that. Don (and the cats) were impressed. ;)
Cleaning is an odd activity for me. After my nauseating experience with our old fridge, I had become determined not to ever be such a slob again. I know that my enthusiasm for cleaning will wax and wane, but tonight it was a way of getting to know my new home, getting up close and personal with it. When I’m in the right mood it’s a zen experience, a way of connecting, something special. It was like that today–a cleansing as much as a cleaning–and I derived a great sense of satisfaction of what I did manage to achieve.
Then I popped some spaghetti meatballs into the microwave, and we had dinner from our newly rediscovered set of dollar store plastic bowls. ;)
We were there until almost closing time, i.e. after dark. This time we decided to take another free night, at the Flying J Plaza (truck stop) in Lodi.
