Introduction
The Calistoga Fairgrounds Campground is, as the name suggests, a small 70-site campground tucked into the corner of the fairgrounds in Calistoga. All you need to do to find it is to remember to take a right at the sign off CA-129 which says “Downtown Calistoga”. You turn off before you get to the thick of downtown, so it’s no biggie.
Description
The campground is clean, with gravel spaces placed between mature trees, giving it a pleasant look and feel. Not all sites are pull-throughs and if you are backing-in challenged it might be hard for you to maneuver between trees and utility posts. You can, however, reserve in advance so if that’s an issue it can probably be resolved. The back-in spaces are probably a bit narrow for big rigs. Pets are allowed.
The park is open year-round except for the first week in July, when it’s used for a fair. If you’re a walker, you can easily walk downtown (it’s a few blocks). If you’re not, take your toad.
Hookups
The basic sites have electricity and water. The hookup pillars had seen better days. Not all sites have a sewer hookup, and those are $3 cheaper than the ones with sewer ($27 vs. $30 as of November 2007.)
Amenities
There’s a wash room with showers, and wireless internet. The wash room was very basic concrete and completely without frills.
Criticisms
The campground host failed to let us know that there was a password for the wireless at check in, even though we inquired about it. She was subsequently very hard to track down, and eventually I had to dial 411 to get the campground number so that I could call.
I think it’s a little overpriced for what you get, but I’m also inexperienced.
