Buzz off!

Filed in Critters

We are being plagued by obnoxious little flies. Apparently, these are cluster flies that are seeking a place to hibernate. Not on my watch, critters.

I think we have gotten rid of the current batch.

Here’s something about them:

The maggots are an internal parasite of earthworms. We have dirt (”garden”) either side of us, so that figures. Several batches are produced each summer. This is the last, and instead of dying off like good little flies they gather on our window and sneak in through the door or wherever and buzz around being the most annoying little critters in the entire universe. The last one particularly liked to sit on my head.

Incidentally, one thing to not buy at a dollar store is a fly swatter. With every attempt on a buzzy thing’s life, a new piece of plastic flies off to be discovered at some later point.

If enough of them get in, they’ll cluster together to hibernate. Basically, they are attracted to the warmth, and will be out anytime it gets over 54 degrees (always, inside here). Luckily, they don’t breed indoors.

Here is what the University of Oregon has to say about cluster flies.
