A very exciting day ;)

Filed in Blog

stormThe last 24 hours have not been boring.

As noted the rain never stopped, and yesterday was a snug-bug-rug kind of a day. Rain is one thing, but wind is quite another. By the late evening the winds were rather strong, gusting to 20mph, and the rig was shaking. We have a big plastic dispenser of water perched on our kitchen counter and it was sloshing around like a crazy thing.

The wind just carried on growing. Gusts of 60mph were recorded and the maximum ongoing wind speed was 45 mph. Whee!

The entire vehicle was rocking and I felt seasick for the first time in my life.

Sleeping, of course, was a sporadic affair. There was a wail of protest from my computer and the lights went out. No lights means no phone and no internet. Some while later, I learned the noise that my computer makes when it’s out of battery and about to shut down. ;)

The banging of the awning worried us. Don went out to tie it down a bit further but at four in the morning we were awoken by a huge rattling and crashing sound and I thought we’d lost the thing. We threw on some clothes and braved the gale to batten down the hatches. I took the opportunity to bring in my saddlebags from the bike. The sewer hose had blown clean off the slunky. We turned off the water at the hookup and went inside, exhilarated by the blasting wind but not at all inclined to experience it again anytime soon. In just a few minutes, my hands were feeling like blocks of ice and one of the gusts physically propelled me along the side of the rig, as though I were flying.

There was no point in going back to bed. Storms bring their own form of energy and I was wide awake. We ran the generator, which is currently very lumpy and unhappy, and warmed up water for hot chocolate. We amused ourselves by watching the weathermen blowing about and getting all excited with their charts and reports and their “storm blast”. We listened to the many, many emergency call-outs on the scanner. Trees and utility poles were going down, some on railway tracks. The truckers were all pulling off the freeway.

Light came, or at least the sky became less black. The sun may have risen, but it never actually emerged from behind the clouds. Our neighbors were up early, as well, no doubt for just the same reasons. We stuck it out until around ten, listening to the sheets of rain and waiting for more weather. The wind was coming directly at us by this point, so we could see where it was driving waves across the huge puddles across from our rig.

We took a nap, finding Gracie dead center in the bed, under all the covers. ;) By now we were tired enough to sleep through almost anything. The worst part of the storm came through around two, sounding as though someone were hammering on the top of the rig.

Our cats became very small.

When we got up, there was still no electricity so I started hand-writing blog posts. Don noticed the lights go back on, but I was having so much fun doing old-fashioned writing that he thought he’d leave me to it. :: rolls eyes ::

The wind has gone for now, although another system is coming in and should be here tomorrow. We had nearly an inch of rain yesterday, and over an inch today. I slipped out during a brief lull in the rain (it didn’t stop, but at least stopped pouring) to get my mail and grab a novel from the campground’s book basket. The recreation field has turned into a lake. Now, the rain is hammering down again and I think it will stay for the night.

Like I said. I’m not bored. ;)

Wow! That storm system is huge! Sounds like you have indeed had a very busy day. I hope today isn’t quite so… exciting? Can’t quite come up with the right word there. Anyway, glad you’re safe and have power again.

I was thinking about you yesterday. Today we are being hammered by thunder and lightning.

BR…it’s calmed down a lot. The next storm is coming in…we’re getting the edges of it now, but it won’t be as severe as this last one.
