A smoky day

Filed in Blog

I just posted pictures of the smoke in Weaverville yesterday, over at Raven’s Rides and Raven’s Roads. That level of yukky smokiness is exactly what greeted us this morning. The trees at the end of our “garden” were obfuscated by smoke, and I couldn’t even see the mountain across the river (the one I don’t know the name of and want to climb).

We stayed up late last night, until 3am, listening to the scanner and wondering what would happen next. Outside it was eerily dark, every scrap of starlight and moonlight hidden by clouds. One lives for news…and it seems that this is not posted regularly or with any consistency. I’m still waiting for the 8pm update from the forestry service site, and it’s close to 11 as I write.

The air has been horrid–it was hard to breathe, even inside the rig, and we certainly couldn’t open the windows. I believe they’re on the verge of classifying the air conditions as “dangerous”, but in the afternoon a puff of wind came along and we found the mountain again. It was a little better after that.

Still, we came pretty close to going and parking someplace else for a while. In an RV, that’s perfectly possibly and almost surreally alluring. But I still feel like it’s bailing, when we might be needed up here in the end. We’re not really in harm’s way, though it feels dangerous. On the other hand, with winds expected to whip up the fires this weekend, along with the possibility of further lightning, that may change.

We gather from our friendly locals that the number of lightning strikes last weekend was almost unheard-of. This is an early fire season, and an excessively dramatic one. It’s as though the universe is conspiring to keep things interesting for us. :: rolls eyes ::

So…I dunno. We’ll need to head down to Reddng sometime soon, as a month without telephone is leaving a bit of a backlog behind. I do want to go up to Dunsmuir, which seems to be the only place in Northern California not currently on fire. But I don’t know if this is the right time.

But, hey. We’re not bored. We’re definitely not bored. ;)

I took a couple of pictures in suburban Santa Rosa (http://my.opera.com/rfhurley/blog/2008/06/27/don). I love the way the light sparkles off the water in the fountain!
